Clay Plates

My baby's fist is so tight - how can you get it open enough to make a handprint?

  • After years and years of practice, Mary has a perfected a baby-sized relaxation technique that helps your little one to release their fist.  The imprint itself only takes a few seconds of gentle pressure.  Most babies are not bothererd at all.

How young can my baby be to make a clay plate?

  • It's all up to the parents- We have made impressions of babies just a few days old.  Generally, babies start to have a growth spurt at about 3 weeks, so if you can get in before that, you'll be sure to get the print that shows the exact size of your newborn.

Can older children make clay plates too?

  • Sure!  They can make a hand/foot plate up to about 2 or 3 years old.  After that, we can do just their handprint up 'til about 10 years old.

Is the material safe?

  • Absolutely!  The clay is certified non-toxic.   Of course, we'll clean off little hands & feet when the prints are made.

How many children can fit on a plate?

  • Two younger children will fit with one hand each.  We can usually get a newborn to fit on a plate with an older sibling up to about 4 or 5 years old.

Can you make larger plates with 3 children?

  • Yes, but it's a little tricky.  The larger the plate, the more stress on the clay and the greater chance it will crack or break in the kiln.  We'll give it a try - but try to be flexible in case you need to come back for a "re-do".

How long have you been making Ceramic Plates?

  • About 12 years, and stones about 10 years.
